Angela Elmendorf speaks of her work as exploring “the space in between,” in much the same way as a staircase occupies an ambiguous middle ground. The transitional space of a staircase offers multiple perspectives on Elmendorf’s biomorphic sculpture made of steel wool. It can be viewed from below, an enigmatic, womblike form with jellyfish tendencies. It can be viewed from the intermediate landing, looming down on the viewer with wild braided tentacles. Or it can be viewed from the top landing, re the distance and half-wall keeps us out of harm’s way.
