Despite being modeled after the mission churches at Acoma, Cochiti, and San Felipe, the St. Francis Auditorium has never been a sacred space. Its single “nave” with elevated “apse” (i.e., the stage), pews, organ, and murals all evoke a church, but its function has always been as a secular auditorium. For this space, Joanne Lefrak created a memorial to Donald Beauregard, who started the murals but died before finishing them. (Carlos Vierra and Kenneth Chapman ultimately completed them.) Lefrak’s tomb transforms the secular by making reference to death and burial.
