Inspired in the Matriarchland: Trekking the Land as a ‘Rooted’ Relative in Northwest New Mexico

Venaya Yazzie will speak on the continual inspirations as a Native woman artist and poet dwelling on the lands of her matriarchs at Dziłnaodithłe (Huerfano) NM in eastern Navajo who still esteem the land as a relative.
Venaya Yazzie grew up on the eastern region of Dinétah in New Mexico. She is Hooghanłani Diné and Hopi.
Her poem, Ancestors in Us, With Us, is prominently featured in the exhibition Rooted Strong: Visions of America from New Mexico, and inspired the title of the exhibition itself. Venaya is an Institute of American Indian Arts alumni.
