Dee Ann McIntyre in Memory of Scotty McIntyre Artist Studio

Angela Ellsworth is the second recipient of the artist-in-residence program at the Vladem Contemporary. Ellsworth was born in Palo Alto and grew up in Salt Lake City, Utah. She attended undergraduate and graduate school back east and lived in Florence, Italy for six years. She is a full professor in the School of Art at Arizona State University and is Founding Director of the Museum of Walking. Ellsworth is a multidisciplinary artist combining traditional and nontraditional art materials. Working in sculpture, painting, and performance the work embodies a wide range of subjects such as illness, queerness, and social ritual. She is interested in art merging with everyday life where public and private experiences collide in unexpected spaces.

For this residency Ellsworth invites the public into her studio at Vladem Contemporary. During the residency Ellsworth engages deep research on acultomancy which is an ancient form of divination using needles and pins in order to see the future. From research discoveries she creates drawings and sculptures based on the application of acultomancy. These drawings will inform future designs for corsage pin sculptures similar to her work included in the exhibition Shadow and Light.

Line-dancing is another way for the public to experience Ellsworth’s studio practice. As part of the residency there will be three line-dancing classes held at the Vladem Contemporary. Line-dancing has been included in many of Ellsworth’s performance work over the years.

Ellsworth’s work is collected by public institutions and private collections across the globe and her work has been reviewed and cited in numerous art publications including Artforum, Fiber Arts, Frieze Art, and Landscape Architecture as well as New York Times and the Wall Street Journal. She has also presented her work nationally and internationally including the Getty Center (Los Angeles, CA,) Museum of Contemporary Art (Sydney, Australia,) Zacheta National Gallery of Art (Warsaw, Poland) and The Church in Sag Harbor, New York. Angela’s most recent museum shows (recent, like right now) are the Museum of Contemporary Art (Denver, CO,) New Mexico Museum of Art at Vladem Contemporary, (Santa Fe, NM,) and the Smithsonian American Art Museum (Washington D.C.)

Collections include Alturas Foundation (San Antonio, TX,) Crystal Bridges (Bentonville, Arkansas,) Museum of Art and Design (NY, NY,) Palm Springs Art Museum (Palm Desert, CA,) Phoenix Art Museum (Phoenix, AZ,) Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art (Scottsdale, AZ,) Tucson Museum of Art (Tucson, AZ,) Utah Museum of Fine Arts (Salt Lake City, UT,) and 21c Museum Hotel to name a few. Awards and grants include Art Matters, Arizona Commission on the Arts, Desert Humanities Fellowship, DiverseWorks, funded by The Andy Warhol Foundation and The Rockefeller Foundation, Franklin Furnace, New Forms Regional Initiative Grant, from Mexic-Arte Museum, New Jersey State Council on the Arts, and The Pennsylvania Council for the Arts. Ellsworth is represented by Modern West Fine Art in Salt Lake City, Lisa Sette Gallery in Phoenix, Turner Carroll Gallery in Santa Fe.
