Christian Waguespack is Head of Curatorial Affairs at the New Mexico Museum of Art and has served as Curator of 20th Century Art at there since 2017 where he has organized over a dozen exhibitions and conducts research on the Museum’s collection focusing on modern art, and art of the art of the American Southwest and has lectured widely on various aspects of American Modernism and Southwest art history across the country. His exhibitions at the New Mexico Museum of Art have included broad surveys of southwestern art history, modern and contemporary American art, and deep dives into the careers of historic artists and art groups from the area, bringing fresh and timely new looks at the regional art of the last century.

You don’t need a room full of the state’s premier creative movers and shakers to attest to the fact that New Mexico has long-held art at the heart of its cultural identity, but it doesn’t hurt! Join Christian for a discussion about what made him fall in love with New Mexican Art History, and how this vibrant story has kept him passionate about telling new stories about the vivacious artists that call this remarkable state home.  He will discuss the lives and work of some artists from the museum’s collection whose trailblazing stories have inspired him the most, and how he found a creative home among this flamboyant and spirited crew. He will also offer a behind-the-scenes look into the newest exhibition at the New Mexico Museum of Art’s Vladem Contemporary, “Off Center: New Mexico Art 1970-2000”, the first exhibition to survey the local art scene during this exciting time, talking about what he loved most about working with the dynamic group of curators who put the show together, and some of his personal favorite dazzling works of art in the show!
