Antoine Predock: Landscape Body Form Light

Architect or artist? Early in his career, Antoine Predock (American, 1936-2024) confessed that he found himself “at a Robert Frost-like fork in the road. I could have chosen artist or architect.” He chose architecture and became known around the world as the architect from New Mexico who brought together earth and sky, rivers and mountains, desert mesas and prairie plains, ancient cultures and modern technologies, into manmade landscapes that ground us in a place and locate us in the cosmos. Yet Predock never forgot the other path before him, the path of an artist. As he insisted in Ride (2023), his last book, there was finally no difference: “But true architects are artists.”

This exhibition takes Predock at his word and explores how art informed his architecture across a lifetime of drawing, painting, watercolor, sculpture, collage, photography, and digital imaging. Immersed in making art, he drew creatively on phenomena of body, form, and light to visualize both architecture and the world.
